JACKIE MOCK

With a humorous combination of alchemy, archaeology, and art, Jackie Mock captures elements of mundane experience to transform them to precious objects that reference everything from finely crafted reliquaries, to archaic mosaics, and elaborate specimen displays. Her practice stems from the obsessive need to collect, catalogue and archive the unexpected. Through diverse means of acquisition (from craigslist want-ads to discarded objects), she turns everyday ephemera into sculptural work by integrating archiving practices and display methodologies typically applied to historic specimens. Her embrace of the physicality of each material is a playful comment on their fragmented and trivial nature. Yet, it is her focus on a high level of craftsmanship and a reverence for her materials that her work becomes as much about the history of the artifacts as it is about her personal history.

Jackie Mock lives and works in New York City. Her recent exhibitions include the Spring Break Art Show and The(un)Scene Art Show, New York, 2015, as well as a full room immersive installation at the Governor’s Island Art Fair, New York, 2014; Tracy Williams, Ltd., New York, 2013, Denning Gallery, New York, 2013 and in the Wassaic Project’s Return to Rattlesnake Mountain, Wassaic, NY, 2012, among others. Her work has been presented in articles by the New York Times, Gothamist, Hyperallergic, Jack Spade NY and in other digital and print publications. Jackie is a graduate of Parsons School of Design with a Bachelors of Fine Arts, and her work has been widely collected throughout the US.
