LILAC'S DREAM

For our initial collaborative project, CLAKULA’s Lilac’s Dream was conceived as a sound installation onboard the S.S. Lilac, and shown in conjunction with the Lilac Art’s summer exhibition series (www.lilacarts.org). Repurposing the communication system on board the historic steamship, S.S. Lilac, CLAKULA (the artist duo Ashley Bell Clark and Matej Vakula) present from each end of the ship’s tubular communication system, an old and emotionally charged song about love and lonely sailing to the far coast of Greenland. Sung by Joe Davis and recorded by CLAKULA in 2014, it is unclear whether the voice belongs to the S.S. Lilac directly, anthropomorphically representing it’s unfulfilled dreams about far away lands, or if it belongs to an ephemeral sailor still working somewhere inside the ship.
