HISTORY
Buying and selling work by Modern and Contemporary Masters for over 60 years, the James Goodman Gallery built an unmatched reputation for conducting business with the highest standards of connoisseurship, scholarship, and ethical practice within the profession. Jim was a founding member of the Art Dealers Association of America, serving as a past President and on the Board of Directors until his death in 2019.
With humor and approachability, he and his staff operated with the transparency and flexibility needed to successfully sell thousands of masterworks ranging from $10,000 to $10 Million. The James Goodman Gallery helped prominent public and private collections worldwide to acquire key works of art until its closing on December 31, 2020. Many important works have returned to the market to be resold, sometimes decades later as children and grandchildren navigate the responsibilities of caring for works that outlive us. Embracing this sense of history with multigenerational client relationships and vast ongoing collector awareness are crucial to placing works in fitting collections.
Just as Jim received his first mailing list from Leo Castelli, when opening the James Goodman Gallery in the 1950s, he mentored and supported the next generation of art dealers - always insisting I build up the rolodex to build my future career. It is my privilege to be the recipient of many meaningful lessons and resources offered during her tenure at James Goodman Gallery, and to have launched a completely new practice on these intrinsic values.
